The GROW Coaching Model: Questions That Actually Move a Goal Forward
GROW is the most widely taught coaching framework in the world — the structure behind most executive coaching sessions, whether the coach names it out loud or not. It's popular for a practical reason: it turns a vague want into an actual plan, in four steps, without requiring any special expertise from the person being coached.
What GROW actually stands for
GROW is an acronym for the four stages a coaching conversation moves through, in order:
- G — Goal: What do you actually want to achieve?
- R — Reality: What's the current situation, honestly?
- O — Options: What could you do about it?
- W — Will (or Way Forward): What will you actually do, and by when?
The order matters. Skipping straight to Options without honestly examining Reality is how people end up with action plans that don't address the actual problem.
Real GROW questions, stage by stage
Goal - What do you want to achieve, specifically — not generally? - How will you know when you've achieved it? - Is this goal actually yours, or something you inherited?
Reality - What's the current situation, as objectively as you can describe it? - What have you already tried, and what happened? - What's actually within your control here, versus not?
Options - What are all the ways you could approach this, even the ones that seem unrealistic? - What would you do if you knew you couldn't fail? - What's stopped you from trying the most obvious option already?
Will / Way Forward - Which option will you actually commit to? - What's the very first step, specifically, and when will you take it? - What might get in the way, and what will you do about it?
Why the order is the whole point
Most people, left to their own devices, jump from Goal straight to Options — "I want to change careers" leads immediately to "so I should update my resume." GROW forces a stop at Reality first, because most goals fail not from a lack of options, but from an inaccurate picture of the starting point. A career change plan built without honestly examining why the current job isn't working tends to repeat the same problem in a new job.
Why a framework alone isn't quite enough
GROW gives you the right four questions to ask, in the right order — but a static list can't adjust based on your actual answer. If your Reality answer reveals something unexpected, a real coach follows that thread before moving to Options. A worksheet just moves to the next box regardless.
MySensei runs a full GROW session the way an actual coach would — starting with Goal, only moving to Reality once the goal is clear, and following up on whatever you actually say at each stage rather than sticking to a fixed script. It uses four coaching styles — Socratic, Mindful, Bold, Warm — depending on how directly you want to be pushed toward Will. It only asks questions. It never gives advice.
What that looks like in practice
Say your Goal is "get better at public speaking." In MySensei, the next question digs into Reality — what's actually happened the last few times you've spoken publicly, specifically. If your answer reveals it's less about skill and more about a specific kind of audience, the session follows that thread into Options built around that real obstacle, not a generic public-speaking tip. Each answer shapes what's asked next.
